What is your mission at Phuket Elephant Care Sakhu?
We believe elephants deserve a life filled with love, dignity, respect, and proper care. Our Sakhu Sanctuary is a dedicated safe haven where rescued Asian elephants roam freely in their natural jungle forest. It offers visitors a chance to connect with and understand these magnificent creatures through 100% respectful observation—strictly without riding, bathing, or touching.
How are elephants connected to Thai culture and history?
Elephants hold a profound place in Thai culture and history, symbolizing strength, wisdom, and royalty. Historically, they served as powerful mounts in battle, vital labor in transportation, and sacred figures in royal ceremonies (where sacred white elephants were reserved for the monarch). Today, while their historical roles have shifted, ethical care centers like ours are dedicated to preserving them as living national symbols.
Why are elephants called "gardeners of the forest"?
Ecologically, elephants play a critical role in maintaining forest biodiversity. As herbivores consuming up to 300 kg of plant material daily, they disperse seeds across vast forest distances, clear pathways through dense jungle, and facilitate new plant growth, making them essential engineers of a healthy ecosystem.
How do elephants digest their food, and what do they eat in Sakhu?
Elephants utilize hindgut fermentation, meaning beneficial microorganisms in their large intestine break down tough cellulose. At Sakhu Sanctuary, our herd enjoys a diverse diet mirroring natural foraging: fresh grass, wild leaves, bamboo branches, and nutritious supplemental treats like bananas, watermelons, and handmade herbal vitamin balls.
Is it common for elephants to give birth to twin calves?
Twin elephant pregnancies are exceptionally rare, occurring in only about 1% of births. Interestingly, Thailand made global history in March 2005 in Surin Province with the birth of the world’s first documented pair of male twin Asian elephants.
2. Visiting Sakhu: Guidelines & What to Bring
What should I bring for my visit?
We recommend packing: a hat or cap, closed-toe walking shoes or comfortable sneakers, sunglasses, eco-friendly insect repellent, sunscreen, and a camera. You can easily present your passport details on your mobile phone upon check-in.
Can I fly a drone at the sanctuary?
No. For the safety and mental well-being of our rescued elephants, drone flights are strictly prohibited on sanctuary grounds. Drones produce high-frequency buzzing that can startle or distress the herd.
Will the sanctuary stay open if it rains?
Yes! Elephants love rainy days—they actively splash and forage in cool mud ponds. Covered canopy walkways keep visitors dry, and complimentary rain ponchos and umbrellas are provided. In the event of extreme unsafe weather, tours are rescheduled or fully refunded.
Are infants, toddlers, and strollers welcome?
Yes! Children of all ages are welcome. Our elevated observation walkways are smooth and stroller-friendly. Our team is always on hand to assist families with infants and young children.
What kind of food is served on immersion programs?
We serve a delicious, fresh homemade vegetarian and vegan Thai buffet prepared daily. Please notify us of any specific food allergies or dietary needs during online checkout.
Should I print my booking confirmation email?
No printing necessary! Help us save trees by simply showing your booking confirmation email or order reference number on your smartphone at reception.
3. Hotel Transfers, Driving & Luggage Policies
What if my hotel pickup driver is running late?
Transfers are shared minivans picking up guests across nearby hotels. Traffic conditions can occasionally cause slight delays. If your driver hasn’t arrived within 15 minutes of your confirmed window, please call our emergency hotline listed on your booking voucher.
Can we drive directly to Sakhu Sanctuary?
Yes! Self-drive visitors are welcome. We are located in Sakhu, Thalang, near Phuket International Airport. Free parking is available. Please arrive at least 15 minutes before your scheduled program time.
What is your luggage policy if we are changing hotels or heading to the airport?
Small backpacks and day bags are carried free of charge. For large suitcases or luggage exceeding 20 inches in size, a small handling fee of 200 THB per bag applies. Please inform us in advance so we can ensure adequate space in our transfer minivans.
4. Booking, Rescheduling & Cancellation
How far in advance should we book?
To ensure small group sizes and peaceful elephant observation, visitor slots are strictly capped daily. Advanced booking is strongly recommended during high season (November through April) and Thai national holidays.
Can I change my visit date if my plans change or if I get sick?
Yes! You can reschedule free of charge up to 24 hours prior to your tour. In case of sudden illness or injury, presenting a medical certificate from a Thai doctor or clinic allows us to reschedule your date free of charge.
Do I need personal travel insurance?
While basic visitor accident insurance is provided during your stay at our sanctuary, we strongly recommend purchasing comprehensive personal travel and medical insurance for complete peace of mind.
5. Online Payments, Cash & Bank Wires
What online payment options do you offer?
We support secure credit card (VISA, Mastercard) transactions via Omise and PayPal, as well as direct PayPal transfers in major currencies (THB, USD, EUR, etc.).

Can we pay in cash upon arrival?
Yes, cash payments are accepted! However, cash reservations must be reconfirmed with our office team prior to your visit date to guarantee seat allocations.
Can I pay using American Express (AMEX)?
AMEX credit card payments are supported via PayPal when the billing currency is set to USD. If you prefer to pay in Thai Baht (THB), please use VISA or Mastercard.
